About the Role:

Building Transparency provides open-access data and digital tools for accelerating the use of embodied carbon and other environmental data within the decision making creation of the built environment. This primarily occurs through comparative use of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) in support of governments, NGO’s, and the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) community. Our mission is to promote sustainable design practices by making carbon transparency accessible and actionable.

We are looking for an energetic, highly motivated, and collaborative individual who can lead the administration and scaling of Building Transparency today, and into the future.

Responsibilities:

  • Administer all aspects of Building Transparency’s day-to-day operations.
  • Implement Building Transparency’s strategic plan, establishing specific strategies and tactics and measuring outcomes against key performance indicators. 
  • Assess project opportunities against current and anticipated workload, staffing, and resources, and maintain criteria to evaluate and sunset projects.
  • Implement and enforce Building Transparency’s governance rules, including reporting and accountability requirements according to the non-profit charter. 
  • Develop and present an annual budget for approval by the board, and provide quarterly financial reporting on BT progress toward meeting annual budget targets.
  • Organize, schedule, and convene the meetings of the Executive Board and semiannual meetings of the Board of Directors.
  • Manage and supervise staff, including interviewing, onboarding, enrolling in the benefits program, correcting actions, and terminating. 
  • Maintain and evolve employee job descriptions and provide mentorship and training. Conduct employee performance evaluations and independent salary reviews annually. 
  • Drive short- and long-term financial security of BT through fundraising, grant writing, and associated strategic income streams.
  • Manage and supervise consultants, including interviewing, selecting, establishing scopes of work, negotiating contractual terms and conditions, confirming deliverables, and payments agreements in keeping with the board approve BT annual budget.
  • Working with the BT technical director, oversee the physical and electronic equipment and office space needs for the functioning staff. 
  • Manage existing partnerships with key stakeholders and funders to ensure long-term, sustaining support and to ensure deliverable commitments are met. 
  • Enable scaling of Building Transparency’s staff via short-term and long-term fundraising and strategic scaling of programs and deliverables. 
  • Represent Building Transparency externally through keynotes, podcasts, presentations, written pieces, and appointments to key industry advisory groups and initiatives to ensure the non-profit is seen as a credible and trusted partner/advisor to the building and infrastructure construction sector on embodied carbon accounting, tools, and data. 
  • Lead Building Transparency’s team to educate and support partners and users of the non- profit’s tools and data. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years leadership experience within the AEC industry, including successful management of project-related deliverables (contracts, schedule, budgets, accounting, execution).
  • Bachelors or Masters degree, with professional accreditations within a given part of the AEC industry delivery chain (PE, AIA, LEED, or other)
  • Proven successful management of team and direct report staff. 
  • Experience in non-profit governance with board lead, mission driven organizations, including fundraising and grant writing.
  • Experience in/understanding software development and software product management, including Software as a Service (Saas).
  • Demonstrated commitment and passion for sustainability and reducing environmental impacts of the built environment.
  • Understanding of carbon emissions related to buildings and infrastructure
  • Familiarity with construction materials, EPDs, LCAs, or greenhouse gas emissions data  
  • Excellent communication and proactive problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and communicate effectively in a fast-paced, remote environment.

Travel Requirements:

You will be expected to travel multiple times per year for team coordination, board retreats, conferences and events, such as Greenbuild and Autodesk University.

Compensation and benefits:

Salary range will be $150,000 – $180,000 US, with benefits competitive for non-profit organizations of a similar size with a national and international impact. Salary will vary depending upon the experience and skillset of the individual.
