Everyone Can Help Decarbonize Buildings

Meet Our Carbon Action Networks

All members of the global building industry can play a role in driving embodied carbon action and helping to reverse climate change. To provide support for education and raise awareness of the need for decarbonization, Building Transparency has introduced our Carbon Action Networks (CANs), focused on knowledge and best practice sharing to encourage continued action from peers.

These peer groups – ownersCAN, contractorsCAN, and materialsCAN – are a continuation of our mission as they help to inspire actions that positively impact our world.

For Manufacturers

The Materials Carbon Action Network (materialsCAN) is comprised of manufacturers who are ready to act on the smart prioritization of embodied carbon in building materials. The goals of the group are to:

Improve embodied carbon awareness via client, industry, and external partnerships.

Enable analysis and prioritization of embodied carbon goals in specifications.

Highlight case studies on low-carbon, carbon neutral, and carbon sequestering interiors.

Promote the EC3 tool for comparing the embodied carbon of building materials.

For Building Owners

The Owners Carbon Action Network (ownersCAN) is a group of developers, users, and managers of buildings that are dedicated to measuring and reducing the embodied carbon of their projects. The goals of ownersCAN are to:

Improve embodied carbon awareness via client, industry, and external partnerships.

Promote use of the EC3 tool and other tools that support accounting for and reducing embodied carbon emissions.

Highlight case studies on successfully implementing embodied carbon policy and processes within building projects and realizing embodied carbon savings.

Keep abreast of emerging policy/legislation regarding embodied carbon.

Use collective influence as owners to advocate for industry action on embodied carbon.

For Contractors

The Contractors Carbon Action Network (contractorsCAN) is a group of contractors focused on achieving embodied carbon reduction targets on their projects through low-carbon procurement. contractorsCAN aims to:

Improve embodied carbon awareness via client, industry, and external partnerships.

Identify opportunities for improvement and areas to influence change for the betterment of EC3 and other embodied carbon tools.

Create resources aimed at supporting contractors with embodied carbon tracking and reduction.

Keep abreast of emerging policy/legislation regarding embodied carbon.

Use collective influence as contractors to advocate for industry action on embodied carbon.

Why Join a Carbon Action Network

The Carbon Action Networks share a common goal of decarbonizing building projects through tracking embodied carbon, smart procurement, and efficient construction practices. Members meet on a regular basis for open communication and best practice sharing, with a focus on measuring and reducing embodied carbon in buildings and spaces.
The main focus areas for each are:

Knowledge sharing among peers.

Awareness building more broadly through a coordinated approach to events and publications.

Resource development.

Funding for contractorsCAN, ownersCAN, and materialsCAN comes from Building Transparency’s industry partners as well as Breakthrough Energy, our leading philanthropic funder.
