ODCi — Open Data for Climate Initiative
Open Data for Climate Initiative

Closing the Global Carbon Data Gap

Many regions lack sufficiently complete and reliable environmental data for construction materials — data needed to support life cycle assessment, inform policy, and guide investment decisions. ODCi is developing generic, independently verified LCA datasets to fill that gap, openly available to the public.

A multi-partner initiative. Building Transparency serves as coordinator on behalf of ODCi's governing partners.

ODCi develops methodologically consistent generic LCA datasets to provide credible baselines where product-specific data is limited or does not yet exist. A defining feature is a common quality framework: datasets released under ODCi are independently verified against shared guidelines, ensuring consistent quality and comparability across regions and data providers.

The ODCi methodology is built for compatibility with EN 15804+A2 and ISO 21930 — the predominant standards for construction product Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) in Europe and North America. This dual-standard alignment supports consistent environmental assessment of construction works across both frameworks.

Following verification, ODCi datasets are intended to be openly available through trusted digital infrastructure, including the ECO Portal and EC3, alongside product-specific EPDs. The framework is designed to grow as additional qualified data providers contribute.

A not-for-profit initiative Final, verified datasets and their documentation are intended to be openly available to the public. Any fees would be set only to recover the costs of dataset generation, verification, publication, and maintenance.

The current pilot, funded by the Autodesk Foundation, focuses on cement, ready-mix concrete, timber, and steel sections. ODCi's growing network of partners includes ECO Platform and the University of Washington Life Cycle Lab.

From foreground models to verified open datasets

1

Parameterized foreground LCA models

ODCi delivers cradle-to-gate manufacturing models covering low, typical, and high scenarios across seven global regions. Models are built without pre-connected background data, allowing qualified practitioners to connect an appropriate licensed LCI database that meets ODCi's methodological requirements.

2

Independent third-party verification

Third-party verification is required for any dataset intended to be released or recognized as ODCi data. The ODCi framework includes a dedicated generic data verification scheme, developed by ECO Platform, covering verification requirements, actor roles, and sampling procedures.

3

Open publication

Verified datasets are published through the ECO Portal and EC3 in formats compatible with EN 15804+A2 and ISO 21930. The ODCi methodology defines a SuperFormat mechanism that reconciles data fields required for both ILCD+EPD and OpenImpact output formats.
